Omochi~! – Sola

Published by Taiyaki Category: Uncategorized

So, I’ve decided to join the New Year celebration just like the other blogs and write my own posts with 2007 anime series reviews and other random stuff in commemoration of another wonderful year. My first post is dedicated to a series which, in my opinion, didn’t get the attention and the praise it deserved.

Sola (which seems to be a pun referencing both “sora” -japanese for sky- and the Spanish word for “alone) started out, like most of these drama series, as a sort of dull show, with some characters who seemed plain and others who looked like they would end up being annoying. The only good points that were recognized so far were the battle sequences and Mamiko Noto voicing the main female character, but the fighting scenes weren’t that special and a seiyuu alone wouldn’t be enough to save the show.

I kept watching… hoping that it would be indeed getting better, and it actually did. Aono Morimiya, the sister of the male protagonist, started getting more screen time and, with that, the drama began unfolding. But not just that… later, the drama was mixed with the action and this created a rather interesting setting for the series. They managed to change both our Matsuri’s view of “a bit cheerful and dumb heroine” and Aono of “an annoying corpse laying in the hospital” to “two girls with rough pasts determined to literally fight until they manage to achieve their respective goals”. Aono fought so nobody would stop her and Yorito from staying together forever, while Matsuri did so she could revert things to how they were supposed to be.

While I was a bit disappointed that my favorite girl didn’t win, in the end the show left me with a nice impression. It’s a shame it didn’t reach a greater popularity, since I think we would’ve gotten a visual novel and other stuff from the franchise. People shouldn’t give up on these shows so fast, since they could be missing out a lot. Oh, well…
